About
Best Damn Writing is an online magazine and literary journal, with quarterly and single-subject print counterparts, published by Superchamp Books. As an extension of the Best Damn Writing book series created by Amir Said, it serves as a platform for writers working in various areas of culture, including: literature, music, film, fashion, art, sports, politics, and technology. Our goal is to showcase the best writing in modern culture, and to amplify the voices of some of the most talented writers working today. We publish at least eight new essays quarterly, along with at least one short story or poem within that same period. We also publish a newsletter that features carefully curated pieces from the magazine and journal, as well as commissioned pieces exclusive to the newsletter.
We publish around a dozen new pieces each month. We may, from time to time, publish one new piece weekly, but the main group of new essays usually run the last week of each month. This monthly output (vs. daily updates) reflects our belief that the most engaging essays (1,200 – 3,000 words) require a slower tempo and less content overlap. This gives writers (and us) more time and opportunity to promote readership of their work, and it offers readers more time to discover and sit with meaningful pieces. This level of output also reflects our opposition to the frantic “content mill” approach to publishing that many media outlets have adopted today. Finally, our business model is based on book sales and subscriptions, rather than ad sales alone. This allows us to remain independent and not at the mercy of clickbait. Which means that we only publish pieces for their depth and substance.
