How To Pitch Us

Generally, I can divide the pitches that we’ve received into two categories: effective and non-effective.  Effective pitches include: clean email copy (which demonstrates level of writing); clear pitches and story ideas; examples of work; professional mention of work placed at other outlets (not humblebrags); and strong indication that you can file on time.

Non-effective pitches include: bad email copy (sure sign of writing quality and a projector of what the editing will be like); unclear pitches and incomplete story ideas; announcements that you have a “billion ideas” with an invitation for us to contact you if we want one of them.

The BEST pitches demonstrate what you are interested in, not what you think we may like. Culture is a broad category; it’s hard for me to see what doesn’t fall under the general rubric of culture.  So if there’s something that moves you, from film to fonts (I happen to like fonts and the history of type design), chances are it will move us — or at least encourage us to keep you in mind.
